Course Description

  • Purpose

    The purpose of this course is to teach students the theory and practical skills required to earn a cosmetology license. In Addition, this course will present students with a pathway to career management in the field of Cosmetology.

    The course content is dictated by the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology.

    The laws, safety practices, and sanitary procedures are taught and adhered to throughout the cosmetology training.

    The student will develop basic cosmetology manipulative skills through laboratory practice.

    The student will have access to the required academic knowledge needed to apply appropriate theory to the field and practice of Cosmetology.

  • The Student Will:

    Develop the technical skills required for future entry-level positions in the cosmetology field.

    Be instructed on how to present themselves as a professional in appearance, performance, and attitude.

    Develop, learn and practice proper customer service skills with instructors, fellow students, clients, and future employers.

    Develop, learn and practice proper safety and sanitation practices.

    Be exposed to many careers related to the cosmetology field.

    Learn about appropriate principles of electricity, anatomy, physiology, bacteriology, infection control, chemistry, and basic mathematics as applied to the cosmetology industry.

    Have the option to enroll in a variety of programs required for Cosmetology licensure regardless of the progress of their career path.

  • Admission Requirements

    VCOC has an open entrance policy.

    Students must be at least 18 years of age and submit an enrollment application.

    Students must provide a current state issued photo ID at time of registration

    VCOC does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, age, or national origin.

  • Transferring Students

    In order for VCOC to award credit for transfer students, the former school must meet the following conditions:

    The former school must be licensed by the appropriate state licensing entity while the student was enrolled. The school’s current curriculum must be approved by that entity.

    The hours earned at the originating school must have been earned no more than two years prior to enrolling in the new school . Both the new and former school must be accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    The new school may only credit completed content, and must substantiate, based on the student’s transcript, how hours are awarded towards each content area .

    Satisfaction of the above must be shown by the transfer student when applying to the Board for exam application If the former school meets the above conditions, then an Official Transcript must be provided in order to award previous hours, performance requirements, and exam grades earned from the former school.

    The Official Transcript must clearly indicate the course content completed in order for credit to be transferred. Hours earned from a program outside the state of Virginia are subject to being awarded depending on the state. The rules and hours of study for that state will be reviewed prior to accepting hours.

  • Re-Enrollment Student Policy

    Students who have withdrawn from VCOC in good standing may apply for readmission after waiting a minimum 60-day period.

    After three (3) years of being withdrawn from the program, re-enrolling students will not be eligible for any previous credit.

    Previous credit earned during the initial enrollment is not guaranteed. If the re-enrolling student re-enrolls within the below timeframes, they may receive the applicable credit.

    Timeframes are based on the time between the student’s last day of attendance of their initial enrollment and the date of the re-enrollment: Less than 3 years – 100% of hours & performances awarded o After 3 years - no credit will be awarded.

    A deposit of $300.00 or 10% of the total re-entry costs may be required prior to Re-enrollment.

    The re-enrolling students will enter at the same level of progress they were making when they withdrew, according to their most recent Satisfactory Academic Progress determination before withdrawal.

  • Length of Program - Details

    1000 hours- 12 month Program

    Phase 1- Enrollment

    Enroll by making Payment or choosing enrollment option

    VCOC will ship your enrollment packet material including online Classroom access and Essential Cosmetology Practical training kit.** ( Only Students enrolled in full program or Practical Training only will receive a kit)

    Phase 2 -Online Theory- 2 semesters /500 hours-

    Study and complete course work and quizzes online. Online instructors are available by email or telephone during business hours if you have questions or concerns. All missing and late work will be required to be turned in before the student is permitted to move on to PHASE 3.

    Phase 3 Practical Training (Hands On)- 2 semesters 500 hours

    All practical assignments must be scheduled and completed on site. Practical work will be completed on a mannequin or live person in a classroom setting with an instructor present.

    Full time Practical Course Structure:

    20 weeks / 500 hours

    Monday-Friday 8:00am - 3:00 pm with 30 min break- 6.5 hours per day / 5 days per week- 32.5 hours per week 15 week training.

    Part time Practical Course Structure- 500 hours Tuesday- Friday 9:00-2:00 pm / 30 min lunch 4.5 hours per day/5 days per week- 22.5 hours per week. 22 week training.

    **Course outline schedule will be altered to accommodate Part Time or Full time Schedules**

    Graduation is contingent upon successful completion of the Online Classroom theory, In-person Training, required hours and minimum performance requirement.

    A Career Studies Certificate will be awarded for students who complete the Online Theory (Phase 2) However Students must enroll and complete a State approved apprenticeship program, or complete the Practical Training program separately**
